Latest statement from Justin's family

As the convocation day of Benson Idahosa University Benin city draws closer we would like to congratulate the graduates on this occasion and wish them success in their future endeavours. But as we do so, we ask them to spare a thought for Yves Justin Nnamdi Ukwu who would have loved to have participated in the same ceremony in two years’ time, but he won’t because he died. He died on 26th May 2015 not of natural causes, but due to the medical negligence of the medical staff at Health Plus Medical Centre, staffed & ran by HMO Marina Medical Services and Benson Idahosa University.

Justin as he was called by his friends, had no idea that his life would end that day or in that way. A few weeks before he was an at award night, ten days before he was at a cinema, Thursday 21st May he was talking about the holidays and coming home on 12th June, and on Saturday 23rd May he was asking about lunch. But thanks to acts of indescribable medical negligence and cruelty his plans were altered somewhat: He did return to Port Harcourt but not in the manner he expected. On 12th June a service of songs was held in his honour and on 13th June he was buried at home. So yes he started his holidays – but in a grave, not cracking jokes with his friends, strolling, whistling jazz or classical music or simply enjoying life. (more) /(less)

The most significant phrase in a convocation ceremony goes thus: “The graduand has been found worthy in character and learning”. This phrase also applies to institutions - can Benson Idahosa University claim to be worthy in character in addressing the issues surrounding the death of Yves Justin Nnamdi Ukwu when they have continuously shifted positions on releasing investigative reports, medical and other records, names of medical staff on duty and all other assistance as earlier promised.? Can they be considered to be worthy in character when they have used every method at their disposal to prevent a public discussion of this issue and most painfully of all, embarked on a vicious media campaign that variously describes Justin as ‘only a student’ and also robs a 19 year old boy of his dignity, personhood and good name.

Once again we congratulate BIU graduates on making it to the end of their recent intellectual journeys and once again we urge all of you never to forget Yves Justin Nnamdi Ukwu ISD 200 level undergraduate student because he will always be remembered by those who love him.
